What I Didn’t Realize About Digestion Until Sleep Fell Apart

When Digestion Starts Whispering & Sleep Stops Listening
For a long time, sleep felt unreliable. Some nights were restless for no obvious reason. Other times, discomfort would creep in after meals—bloating, burping, a heaviness that didn’t quite make sense. Nothing dramatic enough to panic over. Just enough to feel off.
Looking back, those were the early signs. Eventually, the whispers became impossible to ignore. A gallbladder attack sent my husband to the ER, and that moment changed how we both started paying attention to digestion—not as an isolated issue, but as something connected to energy, comfort, and even sleep.

At the time, his eating habits weren’t supporting his health. The signs were there long before the crisis, but we didn’t yet know how to read them.
What I Started Paying Attention To
Around the time we began paying closer attention to symptoms, I also watched a video that explained how the gallbladder works and why digestion can feel strained after meals.
The gallbladder stores bile and helps the body digest fats — and when that system isn’t flowing smoothly, it can show up as bloating, burping, or discomfort. That context helped me make sense of what was happening before my husband’s gallbladder attack—and why small adjustments to meal timing and digestive support later made a difference for us.
For me, discomfort always appeared once digestion had already started. That’s what made me curious about support—not fixes, not cures, just support.
I took steps to simplify my eating and reduce strain on digestion. Those changes were part of a much longer process, similar to how Type 2 diabetes didn’t change overnight—these habits made the difference for us over time.
I follow a healthy keto diet paired with intermittent fasting: no sugar, no refined carbohydrates, and clear meal timing. I eat my first meal around 11:30 a.m. and my last by about 4:30 p.m. On weekends, I often eat just once a day. The structure helped more than I expected.
What Changed for Me
Digestion felt smoother. Meals no longer left me uncomfortable. The bloating and burping eased, and perhaps most unexpectedly, sleep followed. I wasn’t waking up restless. Nights felt calmer. My body didn’t feel like it was working overtime after dinner. This wasn’t dramatic. It was subtle—but consistent, and that consistency mattered.
